Performing migration using Failover Synchronization
Posted by John Villanueva on 02 May 2018 06:24 PM

Migrating JSCAPE MFT Server from one machine to another can be a tricky processes, especially if one or more services in the JSCAPE MFT Server instance in the source machine are bound to specific IP addresses and those IP addresses don't match the IP address of the destination machine. After you migrate, the new MFT Server instance won't allow you to login or probably won't even start (see java.net.BindException: Cannot assign requested address).

One of the easiest ways to perform a migration and avoid this type of problem is to use the Failover Synchronization feature. That's because, in addition to copying server configuration data from one MFT Server instance to another, Failover Synchronization allows you to do IP substition. IP substitution enables you to replace the IP address of the source machine to the IP address of the destination machine for all services. As long as your destination machine can be reached by your source machine (i.e. you can ping the destination from the source), you can use JSCAPE MFT Server's Failover Synchronization feature.

You may refer to the documentation for setting up a failover server to set up Failover Synchronization. Note that the instructions in that documentation page is for setting up a failover server but you can still use them for this purpose.

An added benefit of this method is that you won't have to manually copy files from one machine to another. All you need to do is install the exact same version of MFT Server on the destination machine and ensure that it's reachable over the network. Once Failover Synchronization is set up, you just need to do a one-time On Demand Synchronization, and your destination MFT Server instance will be all set.

Note: If the new MFT Server instance will be using a different IP address, you'll need to request a separate license for that. Just file a ticket in our Help Desk and the ticket will be assigned to someone who can assist you in that regard.
